It’s Time to Complete the 2018 PA Salary Survey

Why We Need More PAs to Respond to the AAPA Salary Survey

I just received the email for a reminder to complete the 2018 AAPA salary survey. This means we need to spread the word and help remind other PAs about the survey. Before we talk about the survey, let’s look back at some numbers from the 2017 Salary Survey.

102,000

The 2017 AAPA Salary report showed an increase in Physician Assistant salaries by about 5% to $102,000 for median salary of PAs. The good news is that PA salaries are keeping up with inflation.

7,222

The number of PAs who responded to the 2017 survey; that’s not a lot of people, and almost half of what responded to the 2016 survey. To help make the salary survey more accurate and a better tool for negotiation it is important more PAs respond to the survey.

70,846

This is the number of people who were sent the survey in 2017 which included AAPA members, AAPA non-members and AAPA student members.

115,500

There were about 115,500 certified PAs in 2016. Of the certified PAs only about 60% were sent the survey.

Percent of PAs who responded to the salary survey in 2017. Even though there were not a lot of PAs who responded to the AAPA report, when we compare the results with other reports that survey more PAs the salaries are fairly close. The BLS report had a mean annual wage of $102,090 and NCCPA reported $104,131.

Each response to the 2018 AAPA salary counts. As a whole there is not a lot of PAs participating in the AAPA salary survey and each person that participates makes a difference. I’ve seen people complain about the salary survey, and its accuracy because there are so few people who respond to it. I’ve also heard that PA salaries are much higher than what is seen in the salary survey.

I personally think the reported salaries from the report are on the low end. I think the AAPA report is a very comprehensive report and out of all the reports on PA salaries it does the best job of breaking down the different types of compensation.

If more PAs respond to the survey it makes it a more valid and accurate tool to help in negotiating your salary. An important part in negotiation is to know what others are getting paid and having an accurate AAPA salary report can help with this.

Don’t delay and complete the AAPA salary report today: 2018 AAPA salary survey.
