Increase in Pay for PAs According to Bureau of Labor Statistics

2020 PA Salary Increased to $115,390

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showed an increase in salary for PAs in 2020 to $115,390. A contrast to a recent report from the AAPA, which showed a decrease in 2020 salaries. The difference could be attributed to when it was collected. The BLS data is from May 2020, when we were amid furloughs and layoffs. The AAPA survey was in February 2021, after the shutdowns. This difference could account for the variation because many workers did not receive pay for several weeks of the year. We can conclude that overall we would see lower salaries in 2020.

PAs working in outpatient care centers had the highest median salaries of $124,610. The top five states for highest salary include Alaska, Connecticut, Rhode Island, California, and Nevada, with a mean salary in Alaska of $150,430. The higher compensation and potential for student loan repayment make Alaska a good option for newly graduated PAs.

Beyond salary, the BLS projects a growth of 31% employment over the next ten years for PAs, which is why many people are attracted to the profession.

The data in this report shows promise for PAs in terms of salary and employment opportunities. The data from the BLS report does not corroborate the AAPA salary report. However, this difference can be accounted for by the timing of the collection. Every salary report for PAs has pros and cons. When you look at them, it is important to understand that they are generalizations and may not apply to your specific situation.
