A One PA Salary Survey for 2020

3% Base Salary Raise for a PA in 2020

A new year, a new salary. I was given a merit increase to my base salary to $114,300 for 2020. This equates to a 3% increase from last year. I’ve been working for the same employer for six years and in that time, I have received a merit increase in five of those years.

The 3% increase is just above average for what we have seen from PA salary reports in 2019. According to the 2019 AAPA salary report there was an increase in salaries for PAs of 2.4% from the previous year; and the NCCPA report showed an increase of 2.6%.

My compensation is based on a base salary and production bonus. It is nice to have an increase in my base salary, however the more important increase for myself is an increase in the compensation per workRVU for my bonus. As my bonus is based on how many and what types of patients I’m seeing, the amount I’m compensated per workRVU will determine how much I end up getting paid through my bonus.

Beyond my production bonus, I’m also given a discretionary bonus of $4,000 annually, that is based on attending practice meetings and peer surveys.

Monetary compensation is a factor that most people look at first, but other benefits can make up for a lower salary. Benefits such as retirement contributions and health insurance can be a significant amount. Student loan repayment is another benefit to consider for new graduates.

If you feel like your salary is lagging behind industry standards, it might be time to renegotiate. Start with the AAPA salary survey, but use other reports to help you find an amount that you feel is fair.

The AAPA does an annual salary survey that is the most comprehensive salary survey for PAs and it closes at the end of February. If you haven’t taken the 2020 AAPA salary survey, help the PA profession by taking the survey and sharing it with your PA colleagues.
