PA Student Report Shows Students Borrow $100,000 for PA School

PAEA Student Report 3 and Education Loans for PA Students

The Physician Assistant Education Association (PAEA) Student Report 3 showed median educational loans for graduate PA education of $100,000; with 85% of students taking out educational loans to pay for a portion of their PA education.

The PAEA was founded in 1972 and is the only national organization representing PA education programs. The Student Report 3 is a combination of two surveys that were conducted in 2018; the Matriculating Student Survey and the End of Program Survey. The matriculation student survey collects information from students entering PA programs. The End of Program Survey is given to graduation PA students.

The median amount of pre-PA educational loans for matriculating students was $25,000 and for graduating students it was $30,000. Around 50% of students held pre-PA educational loans. Although about half of students had outstanding student debt when entering PA school, that number greatly increased for graduating PA students.

Beyond student loans, some students were able to use other forms of financing to pay for PA school. 29.4% of graduating PA students received grants, scholarships, or stipends for their PA education with a median amount of $5,000. There are other sources of financing for PA school, but they are limited.

If you are currently thinking about PA school or applying soon it is important to have realistic financial goals for PA school. Make a plan early on how you are going to pay for PA school and know how much it is going to cost. If you plan now, you’ll be better prepared to pay off your loans when you graduate.
